Lathework My attempts to learn woodturning

Hi,

I have just discovered the fun of working natural wood as opposed to the stuff i can buy in any shop for building material. Don’t get me wrong here, the square cheap wood easily glued together to for essentially any size raw material I want is a perfect thing to train on, and even get some fairly nice pieces out of. But the fun and possibilities from a raw piece of tree is endless, as can be seen on these pics.

 Compare those made from cheap wood beems to these made from logs...

As you can see the texture and feel of the piece is much greater here. There is also the increased risk of finding miniature cracks that can turn into large holes, as seen below.

 I will end this post with a few pics of my workplace, and yes i know the equipment is dirt cheap but so far it has done what i want from it. The Woodturning tools i now use are not however, when the cheap roughing gouge i got from Jula started to bend right where i keep my left hand fingers for control, no I’m not kidding, I decided that I would like to keep my fingers and go for some real quality tools, at about ten times the price per tool that i gave for the whole Jula set. Apart from the security increase I also noticed that there were a lot easier to shape the wood as i wanted it with the real tools.
